Over Thanksgiving brake I attended a Jason Mraz concert in NYC at Carnegie Hall,  where my painting was handled and appreciated by Bill Silvia Entertainment employees. Jason was way too busy that night to sign the painting and meet me. I was asked if it could fly to LA with the employees but decided to hold on to it for now. I hope you like it!

The tissue art in this painting came from kids in Vermont, Nicaragua and Guatemala. How cool is that! The sale of this painting will help keep Kids Share Workshops in the Americas Alive. Next I am heading to San Francisco for New Years to attend a  Further concert. A painting will be created for this event as well. At the end of January, I am traveling  to Costa Rica with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters for a month long program with Kids Share Workshops and Partners of the Americas. I am excited about creating more tissue art with kids in a new country, for future paintings. Stay tuned!

Words can not truly express the awesome experience of being commissioned to paint The Doors: Ray Manzarek Jim Morrison (Dave Brock, Wild Child Cover Band’s Lead Singer) and Robby Krieger. I had two weeks to complete the approximately 15″x15″ painting before the November, 6 concert at The Ridgefield Playhouse, Ridgefield, CT. Erik Abrahamson, a high school friend and I had discussed painting the doors through Facebook. He bought me the ticket and said bring your work and we will have fun! I was up for the challenge.

Delivered on time, the day of the concert we sat in the second and third row from the front.  I was blown away with the enormous talent and energy of this band. You could feel the music go into you and vibrate with the feeling of poetry slamming with hard Rock and Roll. I was born in 1969 when The Doors were in full swing. In 1971, at only three Jim Morrison had died of a heart attack at age 27. Impressively The Doors continued, playing tribute to Jim for the next 40 years, Ray sometimes singing vocals and more recently incredibly talented Dave Brock, leading vocalist from Wild Child. Not only does Dave look and move like Jim his voice is right on! Everyone was mesmerized. Jim’s spirit must have been resonating in Dave! For me it was awesome to be witnessing Rock and Roll history!

Towards the end of the concert I held up the painting to share with the front row audience around me and flashing it to the band. Much to my surprise Ray Manzarek stopped and looked at me and asked, “Did you paint that?” my reply, “Yes I did!’ Ray then said, “Good work, Would you please turn that around to show the audience?” As I turned the painting around I was taken back by the roar of the crowd and standing audience! I felt like a Rock Star for a few seconds! For me as an artist, it was an honor.

After the concert we were privileged to stay as VIP and meet Robby, Dave and Phil, thanks to Phil Chen, enormously gifted bass guitarist and band crew. Ray and Robby signed the painting, I was given a signed pick by Robby, autographs and hugs. I learned later in life about The Doors and immediately became a fan! Robby impressed me with his ability to write many of the doors classic hits, literally over night. Truly a powerful ability that only few poses. Subsequently, The Doors made it into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. When asked by a crew member if Erik was to sell his newly signed painting on EBay, he replied No way! I am a huge fan and it is staying with me.

Life can be full of surprises, for me this will be at the very top and a wonderful story to share with my grandchildren someday. But I do hope this journey is not over for me and you will see me painting more Rock Legends!

Dear friend Kristina, you know I always found your work very wonderful and great!! The workshops you do with the kids is terrific!!
I loved the painting of the Tibetan Snow Lion from the very first moment. As I suggested to you on Skype about half an hour ago, you could make postcards and posters and sell them, and a part of the benefits can go to a Tibetan cause. I will look for a good Tibetan cause for these donations. Good luck to you and all the best and success with everything you do!
